Different Types of Motorsport Fasteners and Their Uses
To ensure the safety and security to the driver of a sports car, there are different types of motorsport fasteners available in the market, each of which comes with different specs and functionality.
One most important part of these fasteners is the wrench-controlled nuts. There is a complete range of these nuts including a hexagonal nut of 6-points as well as 12-point double hexagon nut. These nuts are extremely versatile. The design of these plating and steel type nuts will meet all the requirements.
Important part of the fasteners is the anchor nuts:
These are much similar to the aerospace nuts and have a wide and extensive range of applications. This includes:
One-lug
Two-lug
Right angle
Corner
Full size
Fixed
Floating
Miniature
Locking and
Non-locking.
Furthermore, a few specific types of specialty motorsport fasteners are found in use. These are ideally called the quick-release panel fasteners. These fasteners are locked securely with two turns only but the design of these enable them to take on high tensile loads. These fasteners are typically used in the access panels to take on the shear load.
Another quick-release fastener type is the ¼ turn fasteners. These fasteners allow repeated attachments and removals and are extremely vibration resistant. You will need minimum effort to attach or remove these fasteners. It is due to the push-turn and push-push mechanism that helps it to withstand 10000 N tensile strength.
Few conventional fasteners:
You will also come across a few conventional motorsports fasteners in the market that are also equally important for the safety and security of the driver.
Bolts and screws: These threaded fasteners are often misunderstood. Bolts consist of an assembly of two components with the help of a nut and a screw and it works by its own thread. The nut in the bolt is applied to it using an axial fastening force. The shank of the bolt here acts as the dowel. It prevents the sideways forces to loosen the grip.
Nuts: These are the threaded component of a bolt. These are made of the same material as the bolt and the thread of the nut matches with that of the bolt. The nuts hold these bolts by relying on friction. However, these nuts will not be able to hold the bolts in place if there is any circular movement or vibration. In such places, locking versions of bolts are required.
Finally, the rivets. This fixture holds two panels together. However, these can be used only in applications that experience low levels of load. There are different types of rivets used as motorsport fasteners. One is the tubular type that comes with a mandrel through its center.
Choosing the right fasteners:
Your knowledge about the motorsport fasteners will never be complete without knowing the right ways to choose them. You must ensure that the ones that you choose are certified and safe to use. You will need to choose the right one for your application amongst them. Here are some general notes that will make your selection process easy.
Do not rush. Instead, take time to look at the different sizes, the body panel where you want to install them, the tools required for the installation, and look for the accurate measurement because all motorsport fasteners are not measured in the same way.
Ask a lot of questions to the sales rep when you look at the different types. This will help you to know the right type of motorsport fasteners that you should use for a particular spot/reason.
Ideally, you can choose use different motorsport fasteners for different purposes such as the bonnet catches, mounted Flush, locking, or non-locking mechanism, or push-button ejecting capabilities.
